Footballer stabs mechanic to death over age difference

20-year-old aspiring football player from Afikpo North, Ebonyi State, Jacob pictured above has been arrested by the Lagos state Police command for killing a mechanic, Moruf Sanni by stabbing him to death over an arguement regarding age difference at Iwaya,Yaba on Monday May 25th.

According to reports, the victim, Moruf had an argument and a fight with someone in his area simply identified as 'Somebody', over who was older on Sunday May 24th.

The fight was then settled by the elders in the area.

Angered by Moruf's claim that he was older and was not going to give him respect, 'Somebody' contacted his friend, Jacob to teach Moruf a lesson.

Jacob accosted the deceased in his compound and didn't teach him a lesson but stabbed him repeatedly on the neck and head and killed him.

He was arrested by the residents of the area who witnessed the incident and chained to the corpse.

Father of the deceased, Mr Lukman, who is a taxi driver, said he had gone in search of fuel and as he returned, a neighbor ran to his house to inform him that somebody was fighting his son “Somebody ran to my house.

He said a strange man was fighting with my son.

I immediately rushed there, only to see the corpse of my son.

The suspect was tied to my son’s corpse. I simply thanked him for killing my son and walked away.” The victim's mother according to a relative of the deceased lost her mind immediately she saw her son's corpse because the deceased was the second son she had lost.

“February 20 of this year made it exactly 3 years that the first child of the family was killed. A police stray bullet hit him when the police came to look for some hoodlums.

So, when this one happened again, their mother just ran away and has not been seen since then.”the relative said A police source who spoke on condition of anonymity said the suspect when interrogated gave a different version of events.

“He said they went for a birthday party on Sunday night and it was there they had a disagreement. The following morning, he confronted Moruf and the deceased then brought out a knife which he collected from him.

He said Moruf then got a bottle and it was while he wanted to block him from using it that it mistakenly stabbed him in the neck.”the police source said The father of the deceased has asked for his son's body for burial but the corpse has been deposited at a mortuary while the police says they are investigating the matter.

Animal rights activist compares lab Chimpanzees to African American slaves

An animal rights activist in his quest to grant primates the same liberties enjoyed by humans shockingly compared their legal fight to the struggle of enslaved blacks in the US.

Steve Wise the lawyer 'representing these chimpanzees, Hercules and Leo said:

“We had a history of that for hundreds of years saying black people are not part of society and you can enslave them.

That wasn’t right.

It didn’t work,” said Steven Wise, head of the Nonhuman Rights Project.

His group is asking a Manhattan Supreme Court judge to grant a writ of habeas corpus to two chimpanzees living in a Stony Brook University lab in Suffolk County.

If granted, the writ would free the 8-year-old chimps Hercules and Leo by declaring their confinement illegal.

Wise came before Justice Barbara Jaffee after losing their fight in three other state courts.

He extended the slavery comparison by saying that at one point in time courts didn’t recognize Native Americans as “legal persons” either.

Wise said chimps are “autonomous beings…they are self-conscious…they can understand what others are thinking…they plan for what their life is going to be like…they have language they have mathematics, they have material and social culture.

They are the kinds of beings who can remember the past and plan for the future.”

In a human, argued Wise, those capacities are grounds for the right to be free. .

“Arbitrarily condemning an autonomous being to a life of slavery could eat away at the rights that we humans thought we had,” Wise claimed.

He went on to make the startling claim that locking up chimps “may be even worse than imprisoning human beings” because “they don’t even know why they’re there.”

The DA said animals don't have the same legal rights as humans hence the Judge should dismiss the case because they have another location for the chimps that is safe for them.

Win or lose, Wise said at a press conference following the trial, the hearing itself was a victory.

“Many human beings have these kinds of hearings,” he said.

Chimpanzees “are now being treated like all the other autonomous beings of this world.”

Whether they’ll continue to get that treatment will be up to Justice Jaffe.Story by Linda Ikeji.

Meek Mills denies being engaged to Nicki Minaj

Meek Mills recently granted an interview to Fader magazine where he was asked to clear the air about his relationship and engagement to Nicki Minaj with various media outlets reporting that a ring he bought her in Miami was an engagement ring.

It wasn’t. “It’s definitely real,” he says of their relationship, “but it ain’t really time to get married yet.

We’re still learning each other, feeling each other out.”

He said even his grandmother has been calling him about the supposed 'engagement'.

“Whatever she sees on TV, she believes,” he says.

He said other celebrities, most notably Drake, have started congratulating them publicly.

He also said one time T.I. saw him and excitedly congratulated him on his engagement.

T.I. said “You never asked her, ‘Will you be my girlfriend?’

But she is your girlfriend,” he says.

“You may not have asked her, ‘Will you marry me?’

But you are engaged.”

Meek said he didn't argue but just said.

“I’ve said my part,” T.I. says, backing away with his hands up.

“As long as you know what’s going on.

” From the perspective of his label, anything that keeps Meek in the news is a net positive.

He could always use the help.

Group asks court to stop Buhari’s inauguration due to falsification of certificate

A group, Advocacy for Societal Rights Advancement and Development Initiative, has filed a suit before the Federal High Court in Abuja seeking to stop the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Mahmud Mohammed, from swearing the President- elect, Muhammadu Buhari in.

The suit is also seeking an order to nullify the certificate of return issued to Buhari by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

They filed the suit on the allegation that Buhari did not qualify to contest the presidential election because he gave false information about his academic qualification to INEC.

The Group's lawyer, Mr. Philip Ekpo, alleged that Buhari did not meet the qualification in the 1999 Constitution and the Electoral Act to stand for the March 28, 2015 presidential election.

Buhari, INEC, the CJN are the 1st to the 3rd respondents in the suit respectively.

The group wants an order of interim injunction restraining the CJN “or any person acting in his capacity” from swearing in Buhari as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on May 29, 2015 or any other date thereof pending the determination of the motion on notice.

The suits declares states that the plaintiff seeks among other orders, “A declaration that the 3rd defendant be stopped from swearing in the 1st defendant as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as the issue of perjury involving the 1st defendant has not been resolved.

“An order restraining the 3rd defendant or any person appointed for such purpose from swearing in the 1st defendant as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on May 29, 2015 or any future dates whatsoever for giving false information to the 2nd respondent on oath.

“An order annulling the Certificate of Return given to the 1st defendant by the 2nd defendant.”

“The 1st respondent (Buhari) gave false information in the affidavit he presented to the 2nd respondent (INEC) and on the strength of which he contested and purportedly won the presidential election which was conducted by the 2nd respondent on March 28, 2015.

“The 1st respondent deposed to an affidavit dated November 24, 2014 that his West African School Leaving Certificate is in the custody of the Secretary to the Military Board.

“The Nigerian Army on January 20, 2015, said that in the personal file of the 1st respondent with the Nigerian Army, they do not have the original copy of his West African School Leaving Certificate nor does the Nigerian Army have the Certified True Copy of his WASC results neither do they have a photocopy of the said result.

“The 1st respondent has not met the qualifications enshrined in the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Electoral Act, Cap E6, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2010 (as amended) to have contested the position of President of Nigeria at the 2015 general elections.

“That the authority conferred by Section 140 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) on the 3rd respondent to administer oath of office to any person who will occupy the office of the President of Nigeria cannot be exercised in respect of the 1st respondent who has not fulfilled the requirements of the same constitution and the Electoral Act as it relates to his eligibility to occupy the office of President of Nigeria.

” The case is still pending as it has not been assigned to any judge.

Governor Aliyu asks FG to remove fuel subsidy

Niger State governor, Dr. Babangida Aliyu, while commissioning a N620 million 3-star hotel developed by the Niger State Development Company Limited, NSDC, and the State Sure-P asked the Federal Government to deregulate the oil sector by removing subsidy on petroleum products.

He added that the removal of the subsidy would reduce the black market system, thus allowing free and regular flow of petroleum products to all parts of the country.

He argued that the subsidy on petroleum product is currently being enjoyed by only a select few who have the necessary connections to the importers.

He said: ‘’Unless fuel subsidy is removed and we go back to the real market, we will continue to have the type of problem facing the country at the moment.

Is it not an irony that we sell crude oil and end up buying refined petroleum from the international market?’’

In regards to power supply, the governor suggested the regionalism approach in the distribution of power instead of making all parts of the country to be on the same grid.

Aliyu said it was also sad to note that states that had the resources to construct power plants were being asked to plough the energy generated to the national grid and in return get less than the mega watts they have generated for their state.

Don’t bribe policemen, report them instead - IGP tells Nigerian

The new Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase, says Nigerians should stop bribing policemen and instead report them if they ask for bribe.

He made the statement today when asked during a press briefing in Abuja if bail in Nigeria was free or not...

"We have a zero tolerance for payment of money to free suspect.

I am appealing to members of the public, not to corrupt my men; It takes two to tango.

If they ask you for bribe and you refuse to give, and you have avenues where your grievances can be ventilated, I do not see any reason why you should give them bribe.

The Commissioner of Police is there; the Area Commander is there; the DPO is there; and the technical platform (to report corrupt policemen) is there.

We have opened ourselves to public accountability.

So, you cannot now say the whole problem should be blamed on the police force’’ he said.
